Photograph of Noon Meem Rashed in Cheltenham, August 1975

This photo of a very dapper-looking Noon Meem Rashed was taken in Cheltenham, in the south of England, in August 1975. Rashed had moved there following his retirement from the United Nations.

This photograph is one of a large number of images and documents given to the McGill Institute of Islamic Studies by the daughter of the great Urdu poet Noon Meem Rashed, Yasmin Hassan, who lived in Montreal until 2014. As the Noon Meem Rashed Archive is digitized, we will update this blog regularly with highlights of the collection as we come across them. With the aid of Mrs. Hassan and other informants we will provide context on each item that we showcase.
Yasmin Hassan writes with regard to this image:

"My father always dressed smartly, except when he came to Pakistan. Then in his sisters’ and brother’s homes he felt comfortable in his slacks and bush-shirt."
